Lesson 3: Internet Security |
|
There are many software tools available that can help make your family's Internet experience safer. Here are some basics every parent and guardian should know: Learn your history Most Internet browser and Instant Messenger (IM) programs allow you to view a history of sites visited and chats. Knowing how to check that history can help you monitor your children's online habits, but keep in mind that these files can be deleted and/or changed. Here's how to check the history in a few common programs: - MSN Messenger - choose File in the main toolbar and then select Message History.
- Internet Explorer 6.0 - select the clock icon in the main toolbar.
- Firefox 1.5 - choose Go in the main toolbar and then select History.
- Trillian - In any chat window, choose File in the main toolbar and then select View Activity History.
- Yahoo Messenger - a history feature is not automatically activated in this program. Click here to learn more.
- AOL Instant Messenger - a history feature is not automatically activated in this program. Click here to learn more.
Who is watching you? Spyware is software that covertly gathers information through your Internet connection without your knowledge. Many spyware programs are more annoying than harmful, such as those that collect information about Web sites you visit and create pop-ups. Some malicious spyware programs can steal personal information that could lead to identity theft and/or fraud. - You should consider installing one or more anti-spyware programs. If you have MSN Premium, the feature is built right in.
- You can view a list of top anti-spyware programs on About.com.
Prevent infection Anti-virus software identifies viruses on your computer and prevents them from inffecting your computer. If configured properly and kept up-to-date, anti-virus software is "always on" and will notify you if you start to download or attempt to install a potentially dangerous virus. Most anti-virus programs can also monitor your e-mail (to make sure those daily jokes and other e-mails you receive are virus free) and make sure you don't accidentally send or receive a virus. There are many good anti-virus software options. Most require an annual subscription to keep the virus definitions current. Stay in control Parental control software can help parents control the Web sites and content children view while online. Parental control software is easy to use and can be configured to limit the amount of time your child spends online. It can also keep children off illegal file-sharing sites. Keep in mind though that depending on their computing skills and experience, your children may be able to change the settings or otherwise tamper with the parental control software. * This certification does not permit you to characterize yourself as a spokesperson, agent, or representative of Qwest Communications.
